This week’s blog post comes from Laura Stevens, a freelance marketing consultant who is passionate about working with women in business, to empower them to lead the lives they want to lead! Perhaps this might be just the nudge you need to follow your passions in 2018…
When I started out as self-employed, I could never have imagined the journey of self-discovery I would embark upon, or the urge to rally around other women it would spark within me.
Leaving my full time marketing job wasn’t something I had particularly planned, but rather something that happened out of necessity if I wanted to be happy. I was nearing the end of maternity leave after having my first child and I realised that going back to my full time job wouldn’t work for me. I wouldn’t be able to be the mum I wanted to be, I wouldn’t be able to put as much time and effort into my work as I previously had, and the huge cost of childcare meant that I’d be working for next to nothing.
Yet, I couldn’t afford to not work. I didn’t want to be a full time stay at home mum either. I needed something else in my life. I enjoyed what I had been doing, so set about becoming a freelance marketing consultant and copywriter.
That was four years ago now. Since then, I’ve been amazed by the number of women I have met who are walking a similar path to me. Women who have set up their own business so they can try to regain some form of work-life balance. Women whose lives don’t fit around the nine-to-five corporate world that seems to be presented by society as the only way to progress your career. Women who step out on a limb to strive for what they want.
As I met these women, I listened to their stories. The narrative changes from person to person; often with differing motivations, goals, lifestyles and aspirations. No two stories are exactly the same, but all of them involve women taking control of their lives, following their dreams and shunning an occupational lifestyle that doesn’t work for them.
I find it truly inspiring. I find them truly inspiring.
That’s why, after three years of working as a pretty generic freelance marketing consultant, I decided to rebrand and change the focus of where my business was going. I realised I not only want to work with women, but I want to help them grow their businesses.
I want to empower them to lead the lives that they want to lead.
I already enjoyed working for myself, but since refocusing what I do, I absolutely love it. Knowing that I can help women create their own success and forge a career that works around their life, rather than the other way around, gives me a huge sense of satisfaction. It’s given a purpose to what I do for a living, one that equates to more than just earning money.
Now I know what it’s like to feel passionate about what you do, I can’t imagine losing this feeling. I can’t imagine working in a job I tolerate to bring in money again – and I hope I never have to!
I know starting a business, or going for that dream job, can be scary, but do it. Please, do it! It may just be the best decision you’ll ever make.
